Ayam Penyet Ria, Sungei Wang Plaza

admin Avatar
The first time I tried ayam penyet (smashed chicken) was in Medan, Indonesia….way, way back in 2006.
Even though it was deep fried, the meat remains tender and juicy.
The gado-gado was really good too.
I couldn’t recall the name of the restaurant but I remember our Indonesian host told us that the restaurant is very famous for its ayam penyet.
Ever since then, I have tried ayam penyets sold in certain shops in KL but none were as good as the one I had in Medan.
They were dry and tough while the sambal was just mediocre.A few months ago, BF and I were looking for a place to have dinner in Sg. Wang when we stumbled upon Ayam Penyet Ria.
It’s located at the Concourse Level, near Subway and Bar B Q Plaza.
After our first visit, Ayam Penyet Ria now becomes our favourite makan place whenever we’re in Sg. Wang.

Menu

The menu is quite extensive, ranging from many types of penyet to bakso, gado-gado and satay.
The drinks menu is not too bad. They do have the famous Teh Botol.
Also go ahead and try the avocado juice.

Each “penyet” set comprises of sambal, kangkong, cabbage, cucumbers, a piece of fried bean curd and tempeh (fermented soybeans).
Rice is not included in the set.

Telor Penyet (RM4.50)
Deep fried hard boiled egg.
Tahu / Tempe Penyet (RM4.50)
You can opt to have both or either one.
Just look at the sambal.
Super spicy. Be warned  :p
Ayam Penyet (RM9.50)
BF’s favourite.
It was not too bad.
Lele (Ikan Keli/ Catfish) Penyet (RM9.50)
I would order this whenever I eat here.
It’s crunchy and I especially like it if I get fish with extra fatty flesh.
Eat it with rice and kicap manis.
So good 🙂
Ayam Bakar (RM9.80)
Well marinated with their sweet, black sauce. (the kicap manis perhaps?)
I like this better than the ayam penyet.
Sop Buntut (Oxtail Soup) RM10.50
It’s flavourable, you can taste and smell the spices.
But it’s quite oily to my liking.
Gado Gado (RM7.00)
Consists of blanched cabbage, kang kong, bean sprouts, boiled potatoes, hard boiled egg, small pieces of tempeh, prawn and emping crackers
Served with peanut sauce on the top.
The sauce is slightly sweet.
The peanuts were grounded more finely, therefore the sauce is less crunchy compared to our kuah kacang.
Milo Dinosaur (RM4.00)
To douse the fire from the sambal.
It’s very helpful….lol.

Verdict: Though the portions looked small and the price is slightly high, but the quality and taste of the food made up for it. The service is good although they may take some time to prepare, fry and serve the food. We don’t mind waiting for a little while because we know that  the food is freshly prepared and cooked. The shop is always full of customers, especially Indonesian tourists. I would recommend this place for those who want to try Indonesian food.
